World Book Day celebrations near you

Residents in Worcester are invited to join celebrations for the biggest book show on earth, World Book Day, next week on Thursday 7 March.

To support this national event Worcestershire Libraries and Learning Service will be running a range of activities in libraries and schools across the county.

In Worcester, The Hive, St John's and Warndon libraries will host a selection of free activities for adults and children.

The Hive has teamed up with Writing West Midlands to host storytelling, craft mini books making for adults as well as streaming the online festival with top authors live at The Hive. After school from 3:15pm there will be a children's craft station where you can make a family book to take home with you.

St John's library will be hosting fun for school groups as well as introducing visitors to the library to a host of exciting book titles.

On Saturday 9 March Warndon library will be hosting all day storytelling for the kids with local storytellers and library staff.

As well as hosting activities to celebrate World Book Day, the first ever library card specifically designed for children age 0-12 year will be launched during the World Book day celebrations at Pershore Library by Kathy Kirk, Head of Libraries and Learning. The library cards will also be available on the day at all other libraries across the county.

The new library card has been designed by top author Liz Pichon, one of the UK's rising stars in children's literature and winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize 2011 and Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2012. Author of the popular Tom Gates book series, Liz has included characters from the books in her design for Worcestershire's children's library card.

Liz has produced a video clip which will be screened during the day of celebrations, so the children can learn about her ideas and designs behind the illustrations for the new card. The video will also be available on the Libraries and Learning website - www.worcestershire.gov.uk/librariesandlearning

If you would like to help us celebrate World Book Day please contact your local library for details or visit the website.

Ruth Foster, Literacy and Reading Manager at Worcestershire County Council said "World book day is a fantastic opportunity for us to celebrate our love of books and reading. We would be delighted to see people of all ages visiting their local library to take part in the range of activities which libraries are hosting. We are delighted to be launching the new children's library card which has been designed by Liz Pichon. Liz is a very popular author with Worcestershire children and we hope that they love the card as much as they love her books"
