Summer Reading Set to Launch at The Hive

Families are invited to a special Launch Pad Party at The Hive on Saturday 29 June to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing and to launch the Reading Agency’s space-themed Summer Reading Challenge.

Children aged 4 to 11 can join in with some fun ‘astronaut’ activities and sign up to the Space Chase challenge. The national initiative encourages children to read six books over the summer with an incentive for each book completed. The Hive hosts a special awards ceremony in October with a medal and certificate given to every child who completes the challenge.

The scheme, which is endorsed by the Department for Education, aims to keep children reading during the long summer. Janine Downes, Manager at The Hive, said: “It’s very natural for there to be a dip in reading in the six week holidays, and so this challenge is a great way to encourage children to have fun with reading, to explore new books and enjoy collecting the rewards as they go.”

The Launch Pad Party is a drop-in event from 10am to 3pm. Children can take part in space related activities and receive their space ID card once they sign-up to the challenge. This ID card can be used in any Worcestershire library and will be stamped for each book read. Children will receive stickers and other incentives each time they get a stamp.

Throughout the summer, The Hive will host a variety of activities for children, including Space Mission Minecraft and Make Your Own Martian Mask, every Monday and Thursday during the holidays.

Janine Downes adds: “Every summer we organise lots of fun family workshops and activities, which really helps to encourage children who have signed up to the challenge to keep coming back and collecting new books.”

The Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge is also celebrating its 20th anniversary this year as well as the success of getting over 700,000 children a year into libraries and regularly reading.
