Media and Culture Short Course (Part Two)

Have you heard of, or enjoyed, the University of Worcester’s FREE adult Media and Culture short course? If so, you may be interested in these extra sessions which develop the themes and critical ideas from part one. Join us for part two and be prepared for more discussion and debate! 

The sessions will be delivered by Media & Culture course leader Katy Wareham Morris and her team, and are informed by the lecturers’ published research.

Week One: Media Convergence

Wednesday 8 November, 12pm-2pm

Have you noticed how paid subscriptions and the internet have changed the film and TV industry? This session will investigate these developments and the effect on production, distribution and consumption. It will also address developments in transmedia storytelling.

Week Two: Culture 'Wars'

Wednesday 15 November, 12pm-2pm

The term 'cancel culture' is being used a lot lately in the media, politics and society in general, but what does it actually mean? What are the implications of this? Is it problematic and, what does it mean for free speech?

Week Three: Decolonising the Curriculum

This session will investigate the challenges associated with destabilising 'traditional', colonial frameworks of knowledge and power. How can this be achieved sensitively, effectively to initiate meaningful change?

Week Four: The Commodification of Culture

Wednesday 29 November, 12pm-2pm

In this session we will ask what makes something 'trendy'? Who decides? What is the effect on the consumer? We shall examine and apply the critical concept of 'false wants and needs' and ask, can our material possessions reveal who we really are?

Week Five: Perpetual Existential Crisis

Wednesday 6 December, 12pm-2pm

Contemporary culture is proliferated with self-help narratives and commercialised 'pseudo-psychology'. In this session we will ask why these narratives seem to appeal to contemporary audiences and ask,  why are we always trying to improve ourselves?

Week Six: (Post) Humanity...?

Many us feel like we're living in uncertain, unstable times.... This session will investigate how 'humans' can or will navigate global conflict, environmental crisis and the future of the media. Will these experiences (re)define our human existence?
